Located in Clay County along the Buffalo River just 22 miles from downtown Fargo, Hawley MN is home to over 2000 residents. It was named after an officer in the Northern Pacific Railway named Thomas Hawley Canfield. The city is surrounded by farmland to the west and forested hills to the east. Many indigenous animals inhabit the area, such as deer, moose, waterfowl, and fox. Hawley is known for being a hospitable town, its school system and hometown appeal.
Hawley has a number of specialty shops to choose from, such as Olde Rich-Wood Shoppe, Blossom Floral and Gifts, Sweet Adelines, and Shear Shop. Food and drug stores include Wahl Drug, Dollar General, and Supervalue.
There are also several great places to eat in Hawley. The Whistle Stop is a local favorite, with delicious breakfasts with items like eggs benedict, wonderful steaks, along with home-made pies, burgers, wraps, salads, and soup of the day. Jimmy’s Pizza offers online deals and fast delivery. Fast food includes Subway and Dairy Queen.
The 2010 census reported that there were 2067 residents living in Hawley at the time. Today that number is estimated at 2179. There are around 854 households in Hawley.
Hawley is known for its annual events, such as the Hawley Rodeo, Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion, and Hawley High School’s Homecoming. The Hawley Golf Course offers and 18-hole course, along with the Hawley Golf & Country Club, which includes a snack bar, practice areas, and driving range. But Hawley may be best known for its Hjemkomst Viking Ship which was built in 1973 by Robert Asp. The ship sailed from Duluth, Minnesota to Bergen, Norway in 1982, and is now located at the Hjemkomst Center museum in nearby Moorhead, Minnesota.
The students of Hawley are served by the Hawley School District. It operates two schools, a K-6 school and a school for grades 7-12. These schools are both noted for their high test scores. They are also popular for their sports and arts programs. The sports programs are very popular in Hawley. In regards to arts, students have a wide range of programs to choose from, such as band, choir, clues band, drama, pop singers and other events.
